New Briana Kaleigh Mystery release!

Nicola Trwst Posted on Oct 9, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

I’m excited to announce that headstrong, self-indulgent Briana Kaleigh from The Belvedere Club is back in a new Briana Kaleigh Mystery, Bolinas Bongo. This time she’ll explore the sleepy coastal town of Bolinas, which shuns tourists and hides secrets. Detective Dusty Arkansas is … Continue reading →

Digilit

Nicola Trwst Posted on Jul 2, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

Digi-lit. What is it? The new buzz word for digital publishing. This past Saturday I attended the first annual Digi.lit Conference in San Francisco created by the folks at Litquake.

For many years being self-published was the equivalent to being a kit car, interesting to a select few and not a real car. Today, the internet and Indie publishers have changed that. In the next 12 months, 50% of all books sold will be e-books.

Buon Ricordo : Good Memories

Nicola Trwst Posted on Jun 10, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

During a recent cooking trip to Italy, a friend, Pam Scott, introduced me to Buon Ricordo. It’s not a new digestive or a recently canonized saint, but a marketing concept to further Italy’s slow food movement.

The Unione Ristoranti del Buon Ricordo was created in Milan in 1964 and included 12 restaurants. Today, there are over 100 Italian restaurants participating and a few international ones in Japan, Australia, Vienna, and Hong Kong.

What I Hate and Love about the South

Nicola Trwst Posted on May 13, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

For the last six weeks I’ve been in VA taking care of sick parents. VA is an interesting place. The capital, Richmond, is divided by the James River. Although your history books will tell you VA was a southern state the truth is that on the north side of the James River the people think of themselves as Northerners. On the south side, people speak with a twang. As I was often on both sides of the river, I’ve made a list of what I hate and love about the South. So here goes:

Barnaby Conrad

Au revoir Barnaby

Nicola Trwst Posted on Mar 11, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

A month ago today, the adventurer, Barnaby Conrad, left us behind.

You may have known Barnaby as a bullfighter in Mexico, Spain, and Peru. Or you may have known him as a portrait painter. Or you may have known him as personal secretary to Nobel laureate Sinclair Lewis. Or you may have known him as author of 35 books. Maybe you knew him as owner of the El Matador nightclub in San Francisco. Or perhaps, like me, you knew him as the co-founder of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference.

2013 Year of Snake

2013 Year of the Snake

Nicola Trwst Posted on Feb 11, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

Uck. Slippery snakes. Eweeee. I hear you.
Snakes aren’t sexy unless you’re born under the Chinese sign of the snake. Then you might be very, very sexy. Let’s not forget the snake is the universal symbol of sexuality.

Finding Your Target Audience

Nicola Trwst Posted on Feb 4, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

Finding your target audience is like being the new kid in high school and having to make friends. You can hide out and wait for friends to find you or you can put yourself out there and using trial and error, find the kids who have the most in common with you.

Being cave dwellers, we writers prefer the first method. We believe that if we just write a good story the readers will come. Write it, they will come.

Branding

To Brand or Not to Brand?

Nicola Trwst Posted on Jan 28, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

Branding. You hear it everywhere. At the coffee shops, at conferences, in the stables. Okay, that might be a different definition, but the word “Branding” is as popular as “Platform” was five years ago. First off, I want to say that Branding is NOT marketing. Same nose and chin, but no relation.

Happy New Year!

Nicola Trwst Posted on Jan 16, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

With the debut of my first novel, The Belvedere Club, 2012 was a great year for me. I also began this blog post in 2012 to connect with my readers and fellow writers.

I had hoped to get a new post up every week, but with the writing of the sequel to The Belvedere Club and the editing of an older novel Bayou Nights, my goal fell short by 50%.

New Release for 2013!

Nicola Trwst Posted on Jan 2, 2013 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

First, I want to start the year by wishing you a Happy and Healthy 2013!

As Buddha said: Without health life is not life…

My wish is good health to all!

In 2012, my first novel, The Belvedere Club was published. I was touched and honored by the wonderful response.

Today, I’m excited to let you know about another novel, Bayou Nights, that has just been released on Kindle and will be in book format January 10th.

*  *  *

Bayou Nights is a novel of vengeance, carried out in the terrifying environment of corrupt politics, social injustice, and the exotic eroticism of Voodoo.

Set in the months prior to Hurricane Katrina, Claire Rivet, a Baton Rouge Assistant District Attorney, attempts to connect the rape and murder of a young woman to the similar attack on her when she was ten. Claire is certain the same person is responsible and she lives only to bring her attacker to justice.

In the Louisiana bayou, her quest is dangerously compromised by Mamma Anna, a voodoo priestess who lures Claire into a dark Voodoo practice, magie noire, reserved for those willing to give up everything for revenge.

When the lines between justice and revenge start to blur, Claire struggles to choose the right path, not knowing that Mamma Anna hasn’t left her one.

I hope you will enjoy reading this thriller as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Made in America

Join the “Made in America” Challenge

Nicola Trwst Posted on Dec 16, 2012 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

I recently saw David Muir speaking with Diane Sawyer about buying American this Christmas. I was intrigued and then astonished when David Muir said we could create 260,000 jobs in America if each one of us bought one $64 present this Christmas that was made in America. This means checking the labels because most of our products aren’t made in America. In the 1960s, 9 out of 10 Christmas presents were made in America. Last year less than half our gifts were made here.

Naming Your Characters

Nicola Trwst Posted on Sep 12, 2012 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

The reason I haven’t updated this blog in the last few weeks is because I’ve been rambling through France. One thing I enjoy doing in France is visiting cemeteries. I love reading the strange names on the plots and examining all the diverse burial plots and mausoleums.

This brings me to my post. What’s in a name?

Mark My Words

Nicola Trwst Posted on Jul 10, 2012 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

My last blog was about Voice. This week, I want to talk about Voice’s alter ego, Style. Can you have one without the other? Not really. Yin/Yang. Light/Dark. You see where I’m going.

As writers, we create our art with words. Which words we choose and how we string them together in phrases is our style. We might try to be as concise as possible and write: The girl sits in the chair.

Voice, We All Have One

Nicola Trwst Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by NicolaDec 7, 2014

Writers often hear remarks like: you haven’t found your voice, or you need to develop your voice, or preferably, I like the voice of this piece.

So what is voice? Think of all the contestants of American Idol singing the same song, for example Otis Redding’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
